Yes, you read that right. I’ve made the decision to end the Muriels after this year’s awards. Why, you ask? Because it just felt like time. We’ve been doing this for fifteen years, and a lot has changed since then. I’m no longer in a place where I feel like I have the time or energy to do the Muriels justice. I suppose I could pare them down to something more easily manageable, but then they wouldn’t feel like the Muriels anymore. And who wants that?
Before we begin this year’s announcements, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported the Muriels for the past fifteen years. That goes for anyone who voted, who contributed writing, or who simply followed us throughout the years. It has been my honor to be at the helm, but it wouldn’t have meant a thing without all of you.
In particular, I would like to recognize Steven Carlson, who was my co-pilot at the beginning (wayyyy back in 2006) and even took the wheel for several years while I was pursuing some other interests in my life. Steve hasn’t been as involved in the last few years, but he has always been a spirited follower of the Muriels, and that’s more than I could have hoped for.
Additionally, I would like to show some love to three voters who have been with us every year of our existence, and who have been some of the most valuable contributors to the Muriels cause. A special thank you to Andrew Bemis, Dennis Cozzalio, and James Frazier for sticking with us through thick and thin. I wish there was more I could do to show you how grateful I am for being part of this for so long.
