Mur13l Awards 2018: Outstanding Body of Work

"There is a point, and it’s a rare one, where a person’s resume transcends being work and becomes something both aspirational for the public and a straight-up signifier of a portmanteau I’d like to call ‘funcomplishment.’ It’s a body of work that says no to spare time, but yes to making inroads across the entertainment industry- becoming someone that everyone has encountered in some capacity just be thorough and diverse performances.

"In 2018, Brian Tyree Henry had eleven credits on the IMDB, spanning film and TV with deliberate reach. If he had just had his turns in Atlanta, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Widows- that would have been enough to shame most careers as far as spanning genres and personae. But to start one day hearing colleagues at work talking about how great he was in Beale Street, and then hear the same thing from a bunch of teens talking about how great he was as Miles’ dad in Into The Spider-Verse later on in the same day; that doesn’t happen often. And it’s a testament to Henry’s tireless work ethic that it is happening.

"Now just because something comes out in 2018 doesn’t mean it was made then; I get that. But the stars align and marketing strategies sync up and things unfold as they do, and because of that, when he eventually levels up to superstardom, expect a lot of articles talking about the phenomenon of the Brian Tyree Henry 2018. Because everyone watched at least one of those eleven mediaworks, many, if not most, clocking more than one. It’s a foundation that will serve one of our greatest and most varied actors very well in the future, and I was ecstatic to experience as much of it as I have." ~ Jason Shawhan
