2017 Muriel Awards: Best Supporting Performance, 1st Place

And the winner is…

Laurie Metcalf - Lady Bird [344 points / 30 votes]

“Laurie Metcalf doesn’t have a singular Oscar clip moment in Lady Bird. Instead, she has a constant humanity and exasperation that is entirely believable throughout the movie. It’s a deceptively natural performance, which is the best kind of supporting performance, one that plays to the strengths of the movie rather than calling attention to itself. Without her, Saoirse Ronan’s central character would seem impenetrably quirky. Played against her mother, though, she becomes comprehensible. Her rebellion is to chafe against her mother’s disappointments, which wouldn’t work if Metcalf didn’t play those disappointments in bitter, funny, true moments throughout the film. It’s a role that has surprising emotional demands, and Metcalf nails every one of them.” ~ Christianne Benedict
